Contract management

The discipline and tools for managing the contract lifecycle: repository, approval, signature, deadlines and archiving.

Also known as: contract administration · CLM · Contract Lifecycle Management

What is contract management?

Contract management (often associated with CLM — Contract Lifecycle Management) covers every stage of a contract: negotiation and the reference version, approval flow, signature, tracking of obligations and critical dates, amendments, then archiving. It is not just “storing PDFs”: it means knowing where the binding version is, who approved it, and when to act before a renewal.

What it changes for a company

Purchasing, legal, finance and management share the same need: a reliable view of the contract portfolio, not diverging personal spreadsheets.

A single repository

Master agreement, amendments and signed version in one identifiable file.

Deadlines and notice periods

Critical dates move out of individual calendars to become shared and backed by alerts.

Risk and compliance

Fewer unwanted automatic renewals, fewer contracts “lost” in e-mails.

Common pitfalls

  • Reducing CLM to signature

E-signature is one step, not the whole of contract management. Without deadline tracking, the risk comes back.

  • Forgetting amendments

A master agreement without its linked amendments gives false confidence about your real commitments.
